Success for the Future

In this very competitive environment FL is facing many challenges to retain its worldwide position as a quality supplier and have invested heavily in developing its people to grow their skills and abilities and sustain improvements.

Lynne Baker, HR Director, states: “We have benefited from the successes of our multi-skilled staff who are now able to generate higher productivity and adapt to change more easily.  Our future depends on us being able to continue to train and retain skilled staff and develop people to promote and grow our business in the future, not only for our own success but to ensure that we retain a strong manufacturing base in the UK.  We have come a long way to achieve this - we must now continue these efforts for a winning future!”

Investing in Training and Development

In 2004, FL held a staggering 2,958 training events across the company.

These included regulatory training, skills training, development programmes, and Continuous Improvement.

Over the past three years, we have increased the range of training and development opportunities provided to staff and many more have taken part in sessions to increase their understanding, skills and contribution to business improvements. Staff are encouraged to discuss their development at appraisals and to identify any areas where training is needed.

FL has made a commitment to invest in the training and development of staff and allocates a budget each year to support this.  In addition we have been very successful in obtaining Government funding and negotiating discounts which add up to an extra £0.5 million, and this enables a greater range of people to take up learning places.

In 2005 we will be continuing to seek additional funding to support our objectives and run programmes for our staff.  We have extended our NVQ programmes to include customer service and distribution and our Cell Coaches are taking part in a qualification course with the Institute of Leadership and Management. Our NVQ in manufacturing has continued with 145 staff currently attending sessions at Harlow and Haverhill.
